There was no sound from the whistle, but the Remnants shrieked painfully in unison, a chorus of agony that split the air like knives.
The Stalker dropped to its knees, claws gouging deep furrows in the earth. The Mawfiend roared and shook, its hulking body thrashing violently as if some unseen force tore at it from within. Crawlers rained from the canopy, spasming, screeching, their legs scrabbling uselessly against the dirt.
The Mawfiend lurched forward, as if trying to ignore the pain and attack them. It took one long look at Devvyn, its multitude of eyes glaring with loathing and then turned and bolted. The Stalker and the Crawlers followed. Their monstrous forms crashing back into the black tangle of the forest, vanishing between the trees.
Devvyn stood with the whistle trembling in his hand, his chest heaving. The Remnants' screeches still rattled in his skull. Gaur was saying something to him, but he couldn't hear over the static in his ears. His breathing slowed, and all the adrenaline ebbed away.
