Gaur didn't answer, his knuckles white on the wheel, eyes scanning the twisting path.
The Mawfiend thundered after them, slower but undeterred, its hulking body shaking the trees as it crashed through undergrowth.
Low-hanging branches lashed against the windshield with sharp cracks, some snapping clean, others clawing across the glass like talons. Victor and Wills ducked low in the flatbed, shielding their faces with their arms. Devvyn crouched with them, branches whipping overhead, but the motion made his chest tighten. He hated that he couldn't see. Something told him he had to keep his eyes on the Mawfiend.
Its roar still echoed in his ears, the memory of its crushing jaws and the Stalker's ruined body flashing behind his eyes. That could easily have been his body. He tried to lift his head once, only to snap it back down as a heavy branch scraped so close it tore a line of sparks off the railing.
